 The Allegory of the Staff

For thousands of years and in many cultures, people have relied

upon a staff as an indispensable and versatile tool to help them

accomplish their work and succeed in their goals.

The staff supports a weary traveler across uneven ground and

stony paths allowing him to travel greater distances with less

effort than if he walked alone.  It may be used to support a

burden he carries, making his load lighter.

A staff may defend the person from an enemy who would take

away from him those things he needs to complete his journey.

The staff can extend the person's reach, catching a high branch

to bring fruit to his grasp.  It can probe murky waters to help the

traveler cross safely.

The staff however valuable to the person is only a tool.  It cannot

determine ther traveler's destination, his speed, or his route.  It

cannot control the person's decisions.  It does not receive praise

for the person's achievement, or credit for the person's success.

The stafff simply supports the traveler to exceed his own ability,

and to arrive safely at his chosen destination.
